This weekend, with the support Alaska Sea Grant, we went out to the fishing grounds on the Copper River Delta to use our boats and gear to take care of the wild coastline that takes care of us. Working out where the barrier islands meet the Gulf of Alaska, we cleaned up miles and miles of the outer beach with an incredible team of fishermen and friends.
Together, we pulled out over 5,500 pounds of styrofoam, plastic bottles, micro plastics, and derelict gear; keeping it out of the ocean and the ecosystem.
Everything we collected was sorted on the beach and the majority of it will head for recycling and repurposing, thanks to an incredible partnership with Net Your Problem & Ocean Conservancy.
As fishermen who build our life out on this coast, we’re committed to being good stewards of this wild place and feel really proud to work together with other fishermen from our community to put the time in to take care of it.
